RESUMO

The periodontal condition of 30 type II non-insulin-dependent diabetic patient (NIDDM) was evaluated and compared to that of 30 non-diabetic patients (age range, 30-77 years). Glycosylatedy hemoglobin and fasting glucose tests were used to measure the metabolic control of the patients, and the BANA (N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-naphthylamide) test was used to analyze subgengival microbiota. At the end of the study, the diabetic group was subdivided into 3 groups according to the degree of diabetic control: controlled, moderately controlled and poorly controlled. The nonparametric chi square test was used for statistical analyses: BANA test no statistically significant differents were found between the 2 groups when analyzed as a whole. When the diabetic patient were subdivided and compared to the control group, significance was detected (P<0.01) in the total frequencies of the BANA scores (negative, moderately positive and positive: 1, 2, and 3, respectively) in the 5-, 6-, and 7-mm pockets and also in the 4-mm pockets in the poorly controlled group

RESUMO

Periodontal disease progression of 30 type II diabetic patients (NIDDM) and 30 patients in whom diabetes was not detected was evaluated. Age ranged from 30 to 77 years. To determine the periodontal condition, probing pocket depth and periodontal attachment loss were measured; to determine the metabolic control of the patients, glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting glucose were measured. At the end of the study, the diabetic group was divided into three subgroups, according to the metabolic state of the patients: controlled patients, moderately controlled patients, and poorly controlled patients. Comparing the diabetic and the control groups as a whole, there was no statiscally significant difference in probing pocket depth, but significance (P<0,01) was observed for attachment loss. When diabetic patients were divided into subgroups, significant differences were observed between the poorly controlled and the control groups (P<0,01) for both the probing pocket depth and periodontal attachment. The glycosylated hemoglobin test was more reliable than the fasting glucose analysis
